We plant our garlic in the fall, from last week in September to mid-October, about 4-5 weeks before the ground freezes. This allows for good root development. You may also start to see the stem coming out of the ground, this is fine. We have planted as early as end of September and have had 1-1.5" tall stems out of the ground before winter, with excellent results at harvest. Garlic can tolerate sub-zero temperatures.
Steps for growing great garlic:
1. Separate the bulb into cloves a few days before planting
2. Plant garlic clove root down about 3-4 inches deep, and about 6 inches apart.
The root system will start to form - before the ground freezes.
3. Fertilize in April with a good 12-12-12 fertilizer.
4. In June, a scape will form, this should be removed to allow for better bulb growth.
Note: The scape may be eaten!
5. The garlic is ready to be harvested when 2/3rds of the leaves are brown (in July).
6. Allow bulbs to dry in a cool, dry place. Tops may be cut after 2 weeks.
